Last week was a great week for writing. I was able to take a few days off work (paid! Yay!) to work on what will hopefully be my debut novel.

The Central Library in downtown Hamilton is my temple. On the third floor are desks where you can plant yourself for the entire day, typing away for hours then breaking to swim in the oceans of books all around you. I don’t think there’s any manmade building as sacred and as important as the library.

The novel itself is coming along nicely. I’d estimate I’ve completed 30% of the manuscript. Once it’s finished it’ll be put through the ringer with an editor, beaten up, cut up, bandaged, beaten up again, re-bandaged, given a shave and a haircut and a splash of perfume, then sent out to hungry agents. Fingers crossed they’re hungry for what I’m cooking.

The novel is in the vein of cosmic horror, dark fantasy, with a dash of sci-fi. It was conceived during a love affair between myself, Lovecraft, and Robert Chambers author of The King In Yellow (aren’t all literary inspirations love affairs?). There may be some Oscar Wilde and John Carpenter sprinkled here and there as well. Yes, I know Carpenter isn’t part of the lit canon, but my man is a horror god and his films had a tremendous impact on me growing up, especially since I wasn’t allowed to watch them.

I’ll be posting updates here and there as the book progresses. Hopefully by the time it hits bookshelves you’ll be drooling for a copy.

All right now, back to writing!
